Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE)

Admission is competitive and enrollment is limited.  Possession of the minimum requirements as listed here should not be viewed as a guarantee of admission.

Applicants who wish to be considered for admission to Western University on the basis of Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations must submit the following:

  1. CAPE Certifying Statement of Performance issued to Western directly from the CXC.  Applications are available on the CXC website. Certificates must be official. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable.

    Note: Preliminary Result Slips will be used for a preliminary evaluation of the final grades until the certificate / certifying statements become available in the Fall.  Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor.

    Applicants may be considered for conditional admission on the basis of predicted results.  Predicted Unit 2 results, final Unit 1 results and CSEC must be submitted directly to Western from the institution(s) attended.

    This online form must be completed by either a Counsellor or Principal from the applicant’s school.  CAPE results submitted by an applicant will not be accepted.
    If you are unsure whether you are required to complete this form, please refer to either the “To Do List” in your Student Center or the required documents section of your acknowledgement letter. 

  2. CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) results are required. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable.  GCSE/O-level results may be considered in lieu of CSEC.

  3. Refer to the chart below for program specific required and recommended courses. Course prerequisites should be presented within the CAPE Diploma:

    *Secondary School course descriptions/syllabi may be requested from applicants to certain programs/faculties at Western for assessment of prerequisite course requirements. Applicants will be notified of this requirement at the point of application review and acknowledgement by the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

    Note: First-year Biology and Chemistry requires a CAPE Biology and CAPE Chemistry respectively.

  4. Advanced Standing:  Students who receive a “II” on final CAPE Unit 1 and Unit 2 exams will receive transfer credit for those courses approved by the appropriate faculty.

Transferred courses with a designation of TRN are not directly equivalent to Western courses but may be used toward your degree.

Western courses numbered 1000 – 1990 are first-year courses and 2000 – 2999 are second year.
