The admission requirements are dependent on your educational background. Whether you are a mature student, a recent college, current university attendee, a senior citizen or a former Western student, this site can help you with your requirements.
Please note: The admission requirements given on this page are for applicants to the Faculty of Social Science. If you wish to apply to a different Faculty, there may be prerequisites. Please visit the general admission requirements website for more details.

Requirements By Applicant Type
Ontario High School (current student)
If you are currently attending grade 11 or if you are returning to upgrade your grade 12 courses for next year, you may be interested in taking one of our courses through the Western's Initiative for Scholarly Excellence (WISE) program. This program is designed for high achieving students to take one course tuition free concurrently with your secondary school studies. Click here for more details.
Ontario High School (former student and attended in past 4 years)
If you are a recent Ontario high school graduate, please contact your high school about having a transcript of your grades sent to our office. Grade 12 English (ENG4U) must have been take to be considered for Admission under this category.
Ontario College (diploma incomplete)
If you have attended an Ontario College but did not complete a diploma; and was attending high school in the past four years, we will need a copy of your high school transcript as well as your Ontario College transcript.
Ontario College (diploma complete)
If you have completed a one year General Arts & Science program or a two or three year diploma, we will require that a copy of your transcript be sent to our office for admission consideration. Most Ontario Colleges are able to send electronic transcripts to our office. Please review the transcripts section of the part-time application.
University (other than Western)
If you have attended a university other than Western for less than one year, we will require that you have your high school transcript sent to our office as well as the university transcript. If you have attended university for one or more years, please have your university transcript sent to our office for admission consideration. If you have been out of high school for less than four years a high school transcript may be required as well. Most Ontario universities are able to send electronic transcripts to our office. Former Western Student
If you are a former Western student who left in good standing and have not attended any further academic institutions since leaving Western, please go to the Course Registration webpage. If you are a former Western student who was required to withdraw from the University, please visit our Applicants Seeking Readmission webpage.
Mature/Senior
You may be eligible for consideration as a Mature Student if you:
- Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident at the time of application.
- Will be at least 21 years of age in the calendar year in which admission is sought.
- Do not have a formal basis of admission (applicants having previously attended a university or community college will be reviewed under those regulations).
- Have not normally been in full-time attendance at an educational institution within the previous four years.
- Have achieved at least a “C” (60 per cent) standing in ALL academic work attempted within the previous four years.
You may be eligible for consideration as a Senior Student if you:
- Are a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident who resides in Ontario
- Will be 60 years of age or older during the first month of classes
