Western Law prepares national and international leaders in the practice of law, business and the public service. We consistently have one of the best articling placement records of any Canadian law school.
Western’s full-time faculty members are exceptional classroom teachers who have received national and international recognition for their research. Our professors are regular contributors to leading law journals and are authors of legal texts and casebooks used in courts, law firms and law schools across Canada.
Our professors will push you to think critically, teach you to argue cogently and instill in you a solid understanding of the law. Our professors value collegiality and provide students with opportunities to interact with them as academic and professional mentors.
The relatively small size of the school (approximately 500 students) provides a close-knit supportive atmosphere and lends vibrancy to student life.
Program Info
First–year students are required to take eight introductory courses which lay the foundation for further legal studies. These courses are: Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, The Foundations of Canadian Law, Legal Ethics & Professionalism, Legal Research, Writing and Advocacy,
Property and Torts.
First-year students take one course in a small group of no more than 20 students led by a professor and two teaching assistants. This Small Group Program is designed to provide an intensive and interactive learning environment and enables students to develop skills in legal analysis, research, and writing.
During their second and third year, students are required to take Civil Procedure, Corporate Law, and three of the following courses: Administrative Law, Evidence, Income Taxation, Public International Law, and Trusts. This broad core curriculum sets Western Law apart from other Canadian law schools, and is complemented by a range of elective courses that offer students the opportunity to
focus on areas of law that are of special interest
to them.
Western Law’s innovative January term allows
students to study one course intensively, and to be
taught by visiting professors from around the world.
Hands-On Learning
At Western Law you will have numerous opportunities to develop practical legal skills through our Community Legal Services Clinic, Pro Bono Students Canada, Sport Solution, Western Business Law Clinic, and advocacy and negotiation competitions.
International Exchanges
Western Law is firmly committed to the importance
of international student exchanges, which enrich our school and provide world class opportunities for our students. Our exchange programs span the globe and include partnerships with 22 leading law schools in Australia, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Quebec, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. The experience of being immersed in a different culture is one of the most enriching aspects of this unique and rewarding educational experience.
