FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
The Faculty of Health Sciences is a dynamic and exciting Faculty comprised of six Schools - Communication Sciences & Disorders (Audiology; Speech-Language Pathology), Health Studies, Kinesiology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy - and the interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health & Rehabilitation Sciences.
In addition to its wide range of academic programs, the Faculty of Health Sciences is also home to some of Canada’s most innovative research initiatives, including the Canadian Centre for Activity & Aging, the R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation Exercise & Pregnancy Laboratory, the International Centre for Olympic Studies, and the National Centre for Audiology. Service to the local community is also an integral part of the Faculty’s mandate through such on-campus facilities as the internationally renowned Fowler-Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, the H. A. Leeper Speech & Hearing Clinic, the Kids’ Skills Research Laboratory, the Infant Hearing Program and tykeTALK. Western’s highly successful varsity athletic and campus recreation programs, also have their home in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The Faculty’s many Schools, programs, research laboratories, and community clinics dot the Western campus, with principal locations in the Health Sciences Addition (Nursing), Thames Hall/3M Centre (Kinesiology), Elborn College (CSD, OT, PT, Rehabilitation Sciences), and the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building (Health Studies, Faculty Dean’s Office).
When you participate in Western’s March Break Open House, come and visit us at the Arthur & Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building (HSB), and let us show you some of the wonderful research and teaching facilities in this state-of-the-art building - including our 3D Anatatorium and simulated clinical education suite - while at the same time introducing you to our many undergraduate and graduate/professional programs.
The Western Faculty of Health Sciences is at the forefront of innovation into research and education in the health sciences. Is your future here?

Nursing Clinical Education Suite
Room 306, Arthur & Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building
The Clinical Education Suite is designed to enhance the education of health care professionals from a variety of disciplines, including occupational therapy, physical therapy and nursing. Students are able to practice their psychomotor skills, enhance team functioning and focus on their communication skills in a realistic, safe environment. The suite consists of a nine-bed simulated hospital setting and a simulated home unit. The simulated hospital is outfitted with equipment consistent with a variety of acute care settings, such as oxygen and suction outlets, vital sign equipment, a mechanical lift and IV pumps. Simulators and computer-programmable mannequins are resident in the suite to allow students to perform a variety of psychomotor skills, such as catheterization, dressing changes, and physical assessment. The home unit is set up like a bachelor apartment, and is intended to allow students to learn to provide care in a home setting, developing the necessary confidence, knowledge and skill to engage in practice in this type of environment.
Aging & Community Health Research Lab
Room 316, Arthur & Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building
The Aging & Community Health Research Lab investigates the health and function of older individuals living in the community, examines frailty, functional thresholds, levels of dependency, injury, rehabilitation and strategies to optimize the health, independence and quality of life of older individuals living in the community.
International Centre for Olympic Studies
Room 317, Arthur & Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building
The International Centre for Olympic Studies, established at The University of Western Ontario in 1989, was the first of its kind in the world. It remains the only such Centre in the Americas. It has as its primary mission the generation and dissemination of academic scholarship focused specifically upon the socio-cultural study of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement.
3D Anatatorium
Room 322, Arthur & Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building
The Anatatorium boasts a large collection of models, joints, skeletons, bones, and life-sized replicas to afford students a rich environment for anatomical studies. In addition, the lab houses a unique combination of projection equipment. Two large projectors superimpose and display images on a special screen. Combining these images with the use of specialized polarized glasses allows the images to become stereoscopically three-dimensional. Work is ongoing to develop a software set of class-appropriate anatomical images and animations that will give students in the Faculty of Health Sciences a very realistic, but virtual, view inside the human body.
Laboratory for Brain and Heart Health
Room 402, Arthur & Sonia Labatt Health Sciences Building
Research undertaken in the Laboratory for Brain and Heart Health will look at the brain-heart connection (BHC) by mapping the neuronal pathways that link the brain with cardiac, muscle and respiratory end organs and their reflex processes. The ability of these pathways to remodel with disease and lifestyle interventions will be studied. The result will be a new understanding of the impact of physical exercise to map, train, and protect the brain-heart connection components after they have been damaged by disease or stroke.
School of Kinesiology
The School of Kinesiology, one of seven Schools and Interdisciplinary Programs that make up the Faculty of Health Sciences, is delighted to be hosting prospective students at our Fall Preview Day. We look forward to meeting potential students to share the pride we have in our academic programs. It will be a day when you and your guests have an opportunity to learn more about entrance requirements, Kinesiology modules, student life, career directions and have your key questions answered. We know from experience this open house will help students make the important decision about where they will make their academic home for the next four years.
