Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE)

  • If your school is recognized by the Ministry of Education of your country and is following the national curriculum please follow the requirements listed for your country below.

  • Applicants must disclose post-secondary attendance on the application form and submit official transcripts to the Undergraduate Admissions Office.  If you have attended a post-secondary institution, please review the Transfer guidelines for admission.

Admission is competitive and enrollment is limited. Possession of the minimum requirements as listed here should not be viewed as a guarantee of admission.

Specific instructions on how to submit all documentation will be listed on your Student Center To Do List after you apply. Documents submitted in a format different than requested will not be accepted.

Applicants who wish to be considered for admission to Western University on the basis of Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations must submit the following:

  1. CAPE Certifying Statement of Performance. 

    Applicants may be considered for conditional admission on the basis of predicted results.  If you are issued a conditional offer of admission you will be required to have your final official CAPE Certifying Statement of Performance sent directly from the CXC. Applications are available on the CXC website.

    This online form must be completed by either a Counsellor or Principal from the applicant’s school. CAPE results submitted by an applicant will not be accepted. Predicted Unit 2 results, final Unit 1 results and CSEC are required.

     

  2. CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) results are required. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable. GCSE/O-level results may be considered in lieu of CSEC.

Fine Arts - Studio

  • No course prerequisites 

An online portfolio and personal statement are required for admission consideration to this program.

Foods and Nutrition

Health Sciences

Required Prerequisites

Note: Students considering the Honors Specialization in Health Sciences with Biology will need a Grade 12 equivalent Chemistry in order to fulfill the first year Chemistry requirements of the module.

Kinesiology

Required Prerequisites

Notes:
▪ A Grade 12 equivalent Math and Grade 11 or 12 equivalent Physics are recommended to prepare for senior Kinesiology subjects in biomechanics, research methods, and statistics.
▪ It is strongly recommended that students interested in the BSc program take a Grade 12 equivalent Science courses such as: Chemistry, Calculus, Pre-Calculus Math, or Physics.
▪ A Grade 12 equivalent Chemistry is a prerequisite for first year Chemistry courses.

Management and Organizational Studies

Recommended Prerequisites

Unit 1 and Unit 2:

  • Math

Note: For Management & Organizational Studies a Grade 12 Calculus and/or a university Calculus course is required prior to taking mandatory upper-year Economics courses in Finance, and pursuing a Major or Honors Specialization in Economics.

Management and Organizational Studies - Commercial Aviation Management

Recommended Prerequisites

Unit 1 and Unit 2:

  • Math
  • Physics

A mandatory Supplementary Application form is required by February 15.

For the Flight Option of this program, a valid Transport Canada Category 1 Medical Certificate is required before flight training can begin; two hours of small aircraft flying time is strongly recommended.

Media, Information and Technoculture

Medical Sciences

Recommended Prerequisites

Notes:
▪ First year Biology and Chemistry courses require a Grade 12 equivalent Biology and Chemistry, respectively. First year Biology and Chemistry courses are required for ALL modules offered in the Bachelor of Medical Sciences and Neurosciences programs.
▪ Although Western offers first year Physics courses that do not require a Grade 12 equivalent Physics as a prerequisite, it is strongly recommended that you complete Grade 12 Physics. 

Music

  • No course prerequisites

Faculty recommendation required based on Audition, Interview, Piano Proficiency and Theory Placement results.

Note:  A senior level math course is recommended for applicants to Music Administrative Studies.

Nursing

Required Prerequisites

Unit 1 and Unit 2:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English
  • Math (not Applied)

Science

Notes:
▪  First year Biology and Chemistry courses require Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry, respectively. First year Biology and Chemistry courses are required for ALL modules offered by the Department of Biology and for some modules offered by the Department of Chemistry and other Science departments.
▪  It is strongly recommended that applicants complete a Grade 12 math course. 

Social Science

  • No course prerequisites

Notes:
▪ All Specializations and Majors in Psychology requires a first-year university Math course, therefore any Grade 12 level academic Math is highly recommended for this program.
▪ Math is helpful as preparation for Sociology and Geography programs.
▪ A Grade 12 Pre-Calculus Math and a Grade 12 Calculus (equivalent to Ontario Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Grade 12 Calculus) are required for all Economics modules.
▪ A Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are highly recommended for the BSc in Psychology.

 

4. Advanced Standing:  Students who receive a “II” on final CAPE Unit 1 and Unit 2 exams will receive transfer credit for those courses approved by the appropriate faculty.

Transferred courses with a designation of TRN are not directly equivalent to Western courses but may be used toward your degree.

Western courses numbered 1000 – 1990 are first-year courses and 2000 – 2999 are second year.
