How Western Degrees Work
Your Degree, Your Way
There are three types of undergraduate degrees:
- Honours Bachelor Degree (4 Year): 15.0 credits required after first year
- Bachelor Degree (4 Year): 15.0 credits required after first year
- Bachelor Degree (3 Year): 10.0 credits required after first year
Modules
Modules are a group of courses in one subject area. If you complete a module, it goes on your degree when you graduate. And you must complete at least one module to graduate.
Western has four types of modules:
- Honours Specialization: 9.0 or more credits, can only be part of Honours Bachelor Degree (4 year)
- Specialization: 9.0 or more credits, can only be part of Bachelor Degree (4 year)
- Major: 6.0-7.0 credits, can be part of any degree
- Minor: 4.0-5.0 credits, can be part of any degree
Building Your Degree
There are lots of ways to combine modules and many students graduate with more than one. Combining two modules doesn’t mean you have to take more courses. But it does mean fewer electives. For example, here are two combinations. The first has room for electives, the second does not:
4 year Honours Bachelor Degree with an Honours Specialization
15.0 credits = 9.0 credits for Honours Specialization + 6.0 electives
4 year Bachelor Degree with a Specialization and a Major
15.0 credits = 9.0 credits for Specialization + 6.0 credits for Major
Here’s how you can combine modules to customize your degree:
DEGREE TYPES | AVAILABLE MODULES COMBINATIONS |
Honours Bachelor Degree (4 year) | Honours Specialization Honours Specialization + Major Honours Specialization + Minor Major + Major |
Bachelor Degree (4 year) | Specialization Specialization + Major Specialization + Minor Major + Major Major Major + Minor Major + Minor + Minor |
Bachelor Degree (3 year) | Major Major + Minor Minor + Minor |
Sometimes you think you know what you want. But then you change your mind after trying something else. That’s okay. In fact, we encourage it! The Common First Year is all about having flexibility.
For Arts & Humanities, Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Science, Social Science and Information & Media Studies
In these faculties and programs, you explore modules in first year. How? You’ll enrol in required courses for the module(s) you think you want. Then, you’ll choose electives for other subjects you’re interested in. And don’t be afraid to try something new. Maybe you’re starting in Arts & Humanities. That doesn’t stop you from taking courses in Science or Social Science. Mix and match!
For Engineering, Medical Sciences, Music and Nursing
These faculties and programs have more structure than the others. You’ll focus on your field! This means you’ll have fewer electives in first year and throughout your degree. But that won’t stop you from combining degrees and modules.
Most students will finish their bachelor’s program and graduate with one degree. But what if you could earn two degrees? That’s what combined degrees are. You complete the requirements for two undergraduate degrees in less time than it would take to do them consecutively.
