Textbooks

At university, textbooks aren’t provided for you like they might have been in high school. You buy them yourself. 

But don’t worry, we give you a personalized textbook list and make the process seamless. 

After you enroll in courses, you can see your textbook list online. 

You’ll use your Western Student ID for the Bookstore website. 

But... should you buy them right away? 

You could! If you’re a keener and you want to get a head start on reading, you might want to get them early before classes start. And the best used books usually get scooped up quickly.  

Or, you could wait! It’s smart to go to your first week of classes before you buy textbooks—just in case you change your mind and swap courses (especially electives). Waiting could save you some hassle. 

Both ways are right. It’s all about personal preference. 

What Else Do You Need?

Many students ask about what other materials or equipment they may need. It depends! Generally, you'll need:

• A good system to take notes (paper or electronic—it's up to you!)
• Access to a computer. Most students use their own laptop. Which laptop? That's up to you as well. Some programs have specific recommendations, like Engineering.
• Some programs, like Nursing, may require you to get program-specific equipment, like scrubs! But we suggest you wait until your first week to find out what you need.
